Medford panel votes to keep noise ordinance rewrite in committee

Medford council committee approves summer newsletter, opens review of a 1974 noise ordinance. The Resident Services and Public Engagement Committee voted 4-0 to release its July-August newsletter after Councilor Callahan moved approval, calling the work "a ton of work." Councilor Seng then walked members through noise-ordinance models from Somerville, Cambridge, and Brookline, saying Medford's current rule is "just unexecutable, it's unadministrable." Councilor Scarpelli pushed for stronger after-hours enforcement, noting the city's two code enforcement officers "usually leave at 4:30 every day." Resident Robert Carney told the committee he's lost sleep "at like 9:30 PM on a Monday night" and cited a police staffing drop from 102 to 78 officers. The committee voted 4-0 to keep the ordinance rewrite in committee, with draft language expected after the September 23 Ward 1 meeting.
