MEDFORD — The Medford School Committee's Curriculum and Instruction Subcommittee reviewed district testing practices and previewed the state's post-MCAS graduation framework. Assistant Superintendent for Academics and Instruction Dr. Talbot told members Aaron Olapade, Jessica Parks and Erika Reinfeld that Medford is largely ready for the state's new "Strong Foundations for Bright Futures" standards, built on four pillars including foundational coursework and post-secondary planning.

She said about 53 percent of students currently complete the FAFSA or MASFA, short of the state's 100 percent goal. Olapade asked directly, "Do we feel supported?" raising the specter of an "unfunded mandate." Talbot said she could not yet estimate costs because DESE has not finalized requirements such as possible end-of-course assessments. No votes were taken on either topic; the subcommittee adjourned 3-0.
