Medford Historical Commission Approves Five Demolition-Review Applications
Historical Commission · Meeting of August 10, 2026
Medford Historical Commission clears five demolition reviews, flags cemetery funding risk. Commissioners voted 4-0 on separate roll calls to accept applications for the city-owned Hegner Center at 15 Maple Park Avenue plus four Mystic Avenue parcels, 146 Spring St., 73 Surrey St. and 78 Circuit Road, setting up seven significance votes and a public hearing in September. Staff said an archaeological survey found "about 35 percent" of the Brooks Estate potentially high or medium sensitivity, while a ground-penetrating radar bid for the Cross Street Cemetery relocation drew four bidders.
Roughly $14,000 in city matching funds tied to a separate Brooks Estate survey is at risk if the state delays federal funding past October 1. A commissioner, referred to only as Doug, reported Boston Avenue rezoning text was not ready for a scheduled vote, pushing it to September 2 with a City Council deadline of September 15.
