Medford Conservation Commission approves Arlington Street addition, continues neighboring project to October

MEDFORD — September 17, 2025 — Medford Conservation Commission approves one Mystic River addition, delays the neighboring project over plan discrepancies. The commission voted 5-0 at its September 17 meeting to issue an order of conditions for a small rear addition and deck at 173 Arlington Street, filed by Don Foote, with a nonstandard condition requiring any new vegetation to be native species; staff said Foote could begin interior work as soon as the following morning. A near-identical application for 171 Arlington Street, filed by Alexander Wongberman, was continued to October 1 after commission members raised concerns about two conflicting sets of engineer plans — dated roughly one month apart — that showed the property's existing trees in different locations, affecting how close proposed underground infiltration chambers would sit to the root zones. Commission member Jeremy called for repositioning the chambers to prioritize tree health over marginal gains in river setback, telling the applicant that "preserving the health of those trees is probably more impactful than making an adjustment a few feet away from the river." Wongberman must return with corrected plans, a split operations-and-maintenance document separating construction from long-term responsibilities, and a written response to Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection technical comments.
