Medford Assessors Approve Veteran and Senior Exemptions for January Tax Bills
Board Of Assessors · Meeting of August 12, 2026
Medford Board of Assessors approves wave of veteran and senior property tax exemptions for January bills. The board, comprising Chair Jared Johnson, John Lopes, and Dave Papio, also approved motor vehicle excise commitment number four for fiscal year 2026 totaling $353,661.48. Assistant Assessor Jeremy Ferreira presented exemptions across seven statutory categories, including 72 veterans with service-connected disability ratings of 10 to 90 percent, each receiving $845.43 this year after a 2.7 percent cost-of-living adjustment, and 14 surviving spouses of service members killed in active duty, who owe no real estate tax at all.
The 100 percent disabled veteran exemption stands at $2,113.57 but drops to $1,056.79 for veterans living in two-family homes. A discussion of how to handle accessory dwelling units under the proportionality rule produced no resolution; Johnson noted the board will consult DOR guidelines if a qualifying veteran applies from a property with an ADU. The board entered executive session at 4:26 p.m. to discuss pending Appellate Tax Board matters.
