Arlington Advocate Warns Medford Panel on Rat Poison
Medford's Energy and Environment Committee hears a stark warning on rat poison, takes no action.
Energy & Environment Meetings · Meeting of October 5, 2026
Medford's Energy and Environment Committee hears a stark warning on rat poison, takes no action. Laura Kiesel, founder of Save Arlington Wildlife, told the panel that anticoagulant rodenticides have killed three bald eagles from the nest shared by Arlington and Medford since 2021 and that nearly two dozen Massachusetts communities have now followed Arlington's 2022 public-lands ban and home rule petition model. She cited wildlife testing showing roughly 98 percent of poisoned animals carried levels three to four times the lethal threshold and said "there's no studies that show that these poisons do anything to reduce populations" of rats or mice.
A resident pressed the committee on Medford's planned shift to every-other-week trash pickup, confirmed for July 2027, warning it could worsen rodent problems. The committee separately voted 7-2-3 by roll call to accept its prior minutes and heard that solar installation began this week at the McGlynn School.
